The Project

Ceuta, a Span­ish enclave located at the north of Morocco, is sep­a­rated from the Old Con­ti­nent by a wall put up by means of sub­ven­tions of mil­lions of Euros com­ing from the Euro­pean Union. This enor­mous yet unknown bor­der is meant to stop the migrants from Africa and Asia to arrive to the dreamed El Dorado of the North.

“Ceuta, sweet prison”, is above all a story of the impris­on­ment suf­fered by Gur­jeet, an Indian migrant, who left his coun­try in 2005 and is stuck in the enclave for three years now. Gur­jeet is phys­i­cally blocked by this wall that sep­a­rates Ceuta from the rest of the world, but he is also impris­oned in a leg­isla­tive way in and admin­is­tra­tive maze. The fact that Ceuta doesn´t belong to the Schen­gen area keeps him from mak­ing it to the Euro­pean con­ti­nent, and to be able to find the life of a free man.

After liv­ing in the deten­tion cen­tre of the city dur­ing a period of time, Gur­jeet, who is threat­ened with expul­sion, nowa­days lives in a makeshift camp located in the for­est. With bore­dom, tragedies and sim­ple plea­sures, this movie wants to depict the mis­for­tune and the small hopes of a man trapped in a sys­tem that is financed by every Euro­pean, with­out them even being aware of it.
